Falconry for Bird Management

The 2026 gull nesting season may be drawing to a close with chicks all fledged but have you thought about 'will they come back next year?'. The answer to this is yes they will, gulls are habitual in their nesting behaviour returning to successful nesting sites year after year. They even return to the roof they hatched on themselves.

There are many ways to prevent gulls nesting but we are going to focus on the most environmentally friendly means of carrying this out - falconry.

Falconry has been used successfully in bird management throughout the UK. Introducing a bird of prey on a regular basis to the environment triggers a fear of predation in bird species driving them to abandon site in favour of one with less threat and more likelihood of nesting successfully. This requires a thorough programme of visits that starts when gulls have returned to commence courtship in March/April.
